The trajectory towards these goals was disrupted in April with the devastating earthquake and the strong aftershock in May. UNDP reprogrammed its activities to adapt to the emerging needs of the people and Government of Nepal; helping many of those affected cope with the disaster, and assisting the Government in its response, at both local and national levels. In the earthquake response, UNDP played a significant role in the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment, co-chairing the Secretariat and co-leading four sector assessments, and also co-chaired the Early Recovery Cluster. With additional UNDP experts from around the world, the earthquake recovery programme scaled up rapidly and made use of existing projects and their established delivery mechanisms to provide the needed assistance in a cost efficient manner.
