The South-East Asia (SEA) Region accounts for about a quarter of the world’s population. However, it contributes about 28% of the total under-five child deaths globally, second only to Africa. Over the years, Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 on reducing child mortality has made reasonable progress, globally as well as in the SEA Region. Yet much remains to be done, since at the current pace of progress the Region as a whole is unlikely to achieve the target by 2015. The technical sessions were conducted to meet the objectives of the meeting. The WHO–UNICEF draft Regional Strategic Framework for Newborn and Child Health was shared with the participants. Member States received it with enthusiasm and endorsed it. They contributed to strengthen the contents of the Framework.
