Nepal became a member of UNESCO in 1953 and the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu was established in 1998. Since this date, UNESCO Kathmandu has become a close partner for the government and a great number of civil society organizations to provide strategy and policy advice in education, sciences, culture, and communication and information. Very recently UNESCO has published the first ever comprehensive cooperation programme for Nepal, titled the "UNESCO Country Programming Document" (UCPD) covering a three-year period from 2011-2013. The UCPD succinctly presents the country's situation regarding education, sciences, culture, and communication and information. It also reviews UNESCO's past action and achievements in Nepal, but most importantly the document outlines key areas of UNESCO's contribution to the country's ongoing development.
