Highlights:
The Girl Summit will address a significant global issue. It is known that child marriage harms the lives of millions of women. Around the world:
1. There are more than 700 million women alive today who were married as children
more than 1 in 3 – or some 250 million – were married before 15
2. Girls who marry before they turn 18 are less likely to remain in school and more likely to experience domestic violence, and
3. Young teenage girls are more likely to die due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth than women in their 20s; their infants are more likely to be stillborn or die in the first month.
Specifically in Nepal, it is estimated that:
1. Over 1.3 million adolescent girls (aged 10-19 years) are at risk of being married as children.
2. 24.5 per cent of women aged 15-19 years are currently married or in union, and
3. 48.5 per cent of women aged 20–49 years married or entered a marital union before their 18th birthdays.
