Rivers have very high environmental value; environmental status of the river indicates the environmental status of any region in the world. Rivers in Nepal not only have environmental value it also has high social, cultural and historical value. Bagmati River, the study area and its catchments are very important for Nepal due to its civilization. Bagmati River originates at Bagdwaar, 15 km northeast of Kathmandu in Shivapuri hills (2731m). The tributaries of the Bagmati river system are:
a) Bishnumati, Tukucha, Dhobi Khola, Manohara and Hanumante flowing from North and Northeast part
b) Nakhu khola, Khodku Khola, Godavari and Gundu Khola from South
c) Triveni khola and Balkhu khola from west part of the valley
Bagmati River has very high social, cultural as well as historical value besides its environmental value. Pashupati area, one of the 7 UNESCO world heritage sites in Kathmandu Valley is situated in the bank of Bagmati River, which is also one of the holiest places for Hindu. There are several other such important places along the Bagmati River corridor.
