Nepal is a low-income country with a population of 30.49 million and a per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US$642. The population is mainly concentrated in rural areas (about 83 per cent). Nepal‘s economy is dominated by agriculture, which accounts for over one third of GDP and employs more than two thirds of the population. This population comprises significant ethnic diversity, with many different languages and cultures. Population density varies considerably, as large parts of the country are too harsh for human settlement. The natural resource environment is rich and diversified, but also highly fragile, following reduction of the forest cover.
