The Study on behaviour of returnee sex workers from India to assess impact on the HIV situation took place in India and Nepal from August to October 2011. The study sought to better understand dynamics of the HIV epidemic in Nepal as it relates to female sex workers (FSW) migrating to India for work and later returning to Nepal. Given the higher prevalence of HIV in key Indian cities and lack of recent reliable data on numbers of Nepali sex workers in India, it was critical to determine the size and risk factors in this population and sexual behaviour when returning to Nepal. Implications of the study findings will inform programmatic interventions to meet the specific needs of female sex workers in both India and Nepal.
