The Interim Task Force (ITF) was formed in January 2007, and was made up of 111 Nepali ex-Gurkha members of the Indian army. Recruited and financed by the Government of Nepal, and tasked with supporting UNMIN arms monitors in the establishment of the process of monitoring the weapons of the Maoist army, the ITF was led by Commander BB Gurung. The ITF was designed to be an interim measure, to be phased out as the UNMIN arms monitors presence neared full strength: with teams in each of the seven main Maoist army cantonment sites, the ITF has been phased out in each of these sites as the UNMIN teams have completed verification.
