Why is violence against women different? A woman who has been subjected to violence may have some different needs from most other health-care patients. In particular:
1. She may have various emotional needs that require attention.
2. She may be frightened and need reassurance.
3. Support, not diagnosis, is your most important role.
4. She may or may not need physical care.
5. Her safety may be an ongoing concern.
6. She may need referrals or other resources for needs that the health system cannot meet.
7. She needs help to make her feel more in control and able to make her own decisions.
There are job aids throughout this handbook to help you while caring for and supporting a woman who has experienced or is experiencing violence. The guidelines on which this handbook is based do not directly address young women (under age 18) or men. Nonetheless, many of the suggestions for care may be applicable to young women or to men.
