An International Market Study of Ginger
PDF File Size: 169 KB | Download
Ginger is a member of the Zingiberaceae family and it originated in South-East Asia. It grows best in tropical areas that have high rainfall and hot and humid conditions. Ginger was introduced to Europe by Dutch, Portuguese, Arab and Spanish explorers or traders from about the 13th to the 16th century. The name ‘ginger’ is derived from the sanskrit word ‘Srngaveram’ which means ‘horn root’. In South East Asia the most popular form of ginger is raw ginger. It is grated or finely chopped then added to the meal not long before serving. Ginger adds to the flavor of a meal creating a fresh, spicy pungent taste which is now becoming a valued commodity all over the world. It is revered as one of the most important and valued spices of the world.
