The devastating flood due to the breach of Koshi spur on 18 August, 2008 has resulted into a large scale damage to human and property loss. The flood has impacted a large section of the Koshi-Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) in the eastern side and its Buffer Zone area and has displaced beneficiaries of Haripur, Sripur, Laukahai, western Kushaha and Ghuski. Over 50,000 people have been largely affected and are currently residing in temporary camps. The news of Mai Pokhari as the 9th Ramsar site has been celebrated by wetland lovers in Nepal. It has heightened the name of Nepal in the international arena as well as it represents the wetlands in the mid-hills of Nepal. This shows the strong commitment of the Government of Nepal on the implementation of Ramsar convention in Nepal. Along with this celebration, we should explore more opportunities for judicious use of wetlands and wetland resources in Nepal so that we can maintain a good trade-off between quantity and quality of wetland conservation and at the same time raise the livelihood opportunities of wetland dependent peoples of Nepal.
