UNIFEM (part of UN Women) South Asia Sub-regional office has been organizing the Biennial Ministerial Review Meetings with governments and civil society to take stock of progress, gaps and emerging challenges in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA). The Sixth Review Meeting (India.2008) focused on appraising the progress made by SAARC countries on the BPfA and the five areas identified as areas of priority at the Fifth Ministerial COnference (Islamabad,2005)- violence against women, economic and political empowerment of women. disaster preparedness and management, and health and education- which were identified as areas of priority. The pursuit for equality is often perceived as the pursuit for the ideal. But if human rights are to have any real meaning for women in the global context, its inevitably intimate link with equality makes it a critical makes it a critical tool for social change. The Seventh South Asia Regional Ministerial Conference Celebrating Beijing+15 acquires special significance since 2010 marks the 15th anniversary of the historic Fourth World Conference at Beijing. Keeping in mind recommendations of the India Forward Moving Strategies(IFMS) and UNIFEM's role to stir institutional change through such meetings, this year's Biennial Meeting will broadly address issues on Violence against Women(VAW) and Women's Economic Security as critical areas of concern. The Beginnings of lasting institutional change in all areas of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) lie in an enhanced and clear understanding of these issues.
