The right of women to have access to health services that fully meet their needs is enshrined in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In addition to basic health services, this explicitly includes the right to services associated with their reproductive health. Gender discrimination is at the root of maternal death, and CEDAW requires States to eliminate discrimination against women and
to introduce measures for affirmative action.
