विश्वव्यापी पोलियो उन्मूलनलाई तीव्रता दिने र यसको पुनरुत्थानलाई रोकथाम गर्नेे महत्वपूर्ण कदमका रूपमा आज नेपालले आफ्नो नियमित खोप कार्यक्रममा इन्जेक्टेबल इन्याक्टिभेटेड पोलियो भ्याक्सिन (आईपीभी खोप) भित्र्याउँदै छ । नेपालले आईपीभी खोपको सुरुआत गर्ने पहिलो दक्षिण एक्षिया मुलुक हुने अवसर प्राप्त गरेको छ ।यो इतिहासकै सबैभन्दा ठूलो विश्वव्यापी रूपमा समन्वय गरिएको खोप उद्घाटन परियोजना हो ।
विषाणुलाई एक व्यक्तिबाट अर्को व्यक्तिमा सर्नबाट रोक्ने अतुलनीय क्षमताका कारण विश्वभर नै ९९ प्रतिशतभन्दा बढीले रोगको विस्तार घटाउने मुखबाट खुवाइने पोलियो थोपा (ओपीभी) विश्वव्यापी पोलियो उन्मूलनमा आजका मितिसम्म प्राथमिक विधिका रूपमा रहेको छ । नेपाल, बङ्गलादेश, भुटान, जनवादी लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र कोरिया, भारत, इन्डोनेसिया, माल्दिभ्स, म्यान्मार, श्रीलङ्का, थाइल्यान्ड र पूर्वी टिमोरलाई गत फागुनमा पोलियोमुक्त राष्ट्र् घोषणा गरियो । स्थानिक पोलियो तीन मुलुकबाहेक अन्य मुलुकहरूमा सफलतापूर्वक मुक्त गरिएको छ ।
