Mine action is not just about landmines. It is also about improvised explosive device (IEDs) such as socket bombs and other explosives. Mine action has five areas of work are clearance; mine-risk education; advocacy; stockpile destruction; victim assistance. It includes actions ranging from teaching people how to protect themselves from danger from the explosive remnants of war to advocating for a mine free world.
UNMIN has a small team of mine action experts who work with the Nepal Army to assist them fulfill their commitments. The Maoist army works with UNMIN mine action and IED experts, as they regularly visit cantonment sites to advice on how to safely store IEDs and how to monitor their condition.
