Evaluation of the Meena Communication Initiative

The “Meena Communication Initiative” (MCI) is a 13 episode animated film series. The heroine, Meena, is shown as a role model for girl children as well as a catalyst for reflection and discussion on gender discrimination in childhood. The issues covered in the "Meena" series include son preference, unfair treatment of girls in the family, access to health and education, harmful traditional practices such as early marriage and the dowry system, and and sexual abuse. The MCI is coordinated by the UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia and developed with the active involvement of Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan. The purpose of the MCI is to promote the transformation of the lives of girls and their families through the development of decision-making, problem solving, and communication skills.
