UNESCO is the custodian of several legal instruments in the field of art theft and illicit traffic of cultural property. Christian Manhart, UNESCO Representative to Nepal, will give a public presentation on UNESCO’s struggle against art theft and illicit traffic of cultural property, UNESCO’s legal instruments and international conventions in this field, on Friday, 17 April 2015, 4.00 pm at Nepal Art Council, Babarmahal, Kathmandu.
The international Convention against illicit traffic of cultural property was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference 1970. 128 States are now party to this Convention,including countries of great significance in the world’s art markets, whether they are importers of cultural property, or countries of origin: such as Nepal, Russia, US, France, Australia, Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan, UK.
