WHO Situation Report #2 (3oth August 2006)

Highlights:
1. Districts in the Far West, Mid West and Western regions in Nepal have reported flashfloods and landslides since Saturday 26th August. According to latest reports by Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) the districts mainly affected are Banke, Bardiya, Achaam and Kailali.
2. Up to date, 47 people have died due to the flashflood and landslides, with another 66
people missing. A total of 960 families have been displaced (Source: NRCS).
3. Water level in one of the main rivers causing this havoc receded significantly today after India opened additional gates.
4. NRCS has reported a few cases of diarrhea and unspecified eye disease in Bardiya
district. Clean drinking water is a problem in Bardiya. No other major health issues have
been reported so far.
5. Clean drinking water is a priority. At the moment, no specific requests for external medical supplies ha ve been received.
6. Home Minister Situla after inspecting the flood affected areas informed that Rs 1 million each have been provided for distribution of relief material in Banke and Bardiya and Rs300,000 to victims of Achham district.
