Less than a week ago today, after several days of heavy rain in Dadeldhura District in the Far West, 12 year old Bishna Bhul and her younger brother Pune, were playing near their house when a landslide occurred in their village. They sheltered in a water drum near to where they were playing and somehow survived the ordeal of tons of soil and debris engulfing their home. When they emerged, injured but alive, they learned that their mother, father, and younger 4 year old brother and 7 year old sister had not been so fortunate. “Mother Nature has orphaned us”, 12 year old Bishna is quoted as saying to the Himalayan Times.
Barely a day goes by at this time of year in Nepal, when we don’t receive a report of fatalities and losses from natural hazards. A flood in Kailali. A landslide in Achham. A drought in the Far West pushing a further 500,000 Nepalis beyond the 3 million already, into food insecurity after the region’s lowest rainfall in recorded history. And the inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley live with the likelihood of a major earthquake striking this city in our life times. A city which has grown from little over one million to well over two million in the last two decades.
