Hydropower is the major indegenous energy source of Nepal. The theoretical hydropower potential of the country has been estimated at 83,000 MW out of which 27,000 MW is considered to be economically exploitable. Besides large-, medium- and small- scale projects, several mini (1- 100 KW) hydropower projects could be implemented in different hilly terrains of the country. Economic development plans are implemented in five-year plan (1985-1990) include increased production, increased opportunities for productive employment and fulfillment of the minimum basic needs of the people. The plan particularly emphasises the development of mini hydropower projects in addition to the implementation of medium- and large-sized projects to meet national needs and for export as stated below:
- Small hydropower projects will be gradually built in areas where electricity cannot be supplied through the national grid.
- Non-governmental sector will be encouraged to undertake mini hydropower projects.
