Emergency health action in Nepal- WHO Emergency and Humanitarian Action (EHA) Newsletter - Issue XI, April 2007

Transition and complexity are key terms that could be used to describe the current public health scenario in the country. Despite new conflict patterns along ethno-caste lines, Nepal appears to be moving towards a post-conflict scenario. Policy makers in the new interim government and international partner organizations are at an important juncture, where strategic decisions on strengthening the health system are being made. In order to facilitate sound decision-making and policy-planning during this period of change, WHO EHA recently organized a Health in Transition and a Disaster Health Working Group workshop aiming at promoting best public health practice. On April 7, Nepal also observed the World Health Day focusing on international health security. By end of March, the EHA programme completed the planned activities of the SIDA-funded HAC programme. An active period with an expanded team and extensive field work had come to an end and it was time to review lessons learned and evaluate outputs. This newsletter summarizes the main achievements with a particular focus on distribution of emergency medicine to vulnerable populations. Articles from IRC on primary health care and UNICEF on community based therapeutic feeding highlight other pressing public health concerns in the country.
