CHAD: Country Office Food Security Update (July 2009)
PDF File Size: 1.11 MB | Download
The overall food Security situation in Chad for the month of July 2009 remained relatively acceptable in both the sudanian and sahelian areas. Except for some difficulties which are usually observed in the lean season, the overall food security situation of the country is not alarming. However, it is worth recalling that 2008/2009 harvest was less than that of the 2007/2008 with a drop of 10.8% in cereal production. In this lean period, there is a considerable depletion of peasants stocks. The situation of pastoral farmers in the Sahelian zone is alarming. Field reports indicate that the delay in the onset of rains and dry spells in some areas has resulted in poor pasture regeneration and the death of livestock. About 2,300 cattle have been reported dead in Chari Baguirmi alone in June. A
joint WFP/FAO/UNICEF/Government mission is in the field between 4 and 14/08/2009, for a rapid assessment of the food security and zoo-sanitary situation in order to determine the magnitude of the problem and recommend the way forward.
