An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale shook Nepal at 11.56am local time (06:11 GMT) on Saturday, 25 April 2015. Its effects were felt in across the country. It is reported that 700,000 houses were either fully or partially destroyed across the country and in Kathmandu alone 300,000 houses suffered partial damage. Scores of houses were razed to the ground in the capital. Ministry of Home Affairs received initial reports of damage of life and property from 25 districts of Nepal. Western Nepal and Kathmandu felt the devastating effects of the quake. The death toll from the earthquake measuring has reached 4,252 till date and report on more casualties are pouring in. According to the National Emergency Operation Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs, as reported in the media, more than 7,000 persons have suffered injuries after being buried under the debris of collapsed structures. An NEOC official estimated that more than 6.6 million people were directly affected and over one million of them rendered homeless. As many as 34 districts, mostly in the central, eastern and western regions, were affected by the earthquake. Of them, nine districts have been the worst hit. Although the government has received relief materials from foreign countries, donor agencies including International Non-Governmental Organisations, NGOs, various organisations and people from different walks of life, distribution of the relief materials are yet to adequate to meet the demand even on the third day since the devastating earthquake. Apart from the immediate responses to the humanitarian assistance to the victims, the need of addressing the damage to the standing crops and livestock is another aspect to be considered as emergency response. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has decide to extends its support to the Government of Nepal towards responding to the damages in the agricultural and livestock sector.
