The severity index provides a rapid overview of the severity of the humanitarian situation across the 14 priority districts at a VDC level following the 25 April and 12 May earthquakes in Nepal. The intention is to support targeting of the affected and vulnerable population. It is a cross-sectoral model that uses composite indicators measuring three sub-indices: earthquake impact, physical vulnerability and socioeconomic vulnerability, and to form a multi-criteria model. This severity index is an update of the model included in the revised Flash Appeal published on 2 June. The original model was at a district level whereas the latest model is at a VDC level. This improved granularity is possible in part due to the recent availability of assessment information that details earthquake impact at a VDC level. It is envisaged that the improved granularity can facilitate strategic operational planning and targeting, particularly when response capacity or timeframe is limited. The weightings of the indicators have also been updated to reflect the shift in priorities since the model was first conceived.
