UNESCO, one of the 14 United Nation bodies,was founded in 1946 in the aftermath of the two devastating world wars. It is UNSECO's specific mission to lay the foundations for international peace and the common welfare of humanity. This is done by promoting cooperation among nations through education, science, culture and communication, by developing human resources, promoting the values of freedom, dignity and justice and facilitating access to and sharing of knowledge.
The Organization now has 187 Member States and 76 field offices. UNESCO Headquarters is in Paris. The Kingdom of Nepal joined UNESCO in 1953. The UNESCO Kathmandu Office was established in 1998.
To further its ideal of peaceful and equitable world UNESCO works in four major fields that are fundamental to achieving intellectual and moral solidarity of mankinds; education, science, cultural development and communication.
