A total of 35,986 classrooms have been destroyed while 16,761 additional classrooms have been damaged. In addition, children and their teachers need psychosocial support and the protective environment that education can provide.
More than 1 million children need Temporary Learning Centres (TLCs) to be able to access education as schools are reopening. The Cluster anticipates that the level of damage and destruction to education facilities will further increase as a result of the monsoon, given the risks of landslides and flooding. Before the earthquakes, 1.2 million children were out of school. The education in emergencies response is mitigating the risk that this
number significantly increases post-earthquake. In a context like Nepal, education is needed to keep children safe and protected out of danger from child trafficking, child marriage and child labour.
