The destruction of water systems across 14 districts has left around 1.1 million people without access to protected water sources. With significant damage to housing and other assets, some 3 million people require hygiene assistance – thousands of people remain in displacement sites requiring temporary water supply and sanitation services. Significant damage to latrines has also left another 1.1 million people without safe, hygienic and dignified means to access sanitation facilities.
The need for WASH services is expected to increase during the monsoon season with concerns about landslides and displacement, within districts and perhaps into the Kathmandu Valley. The risk of diarrhoea outbreaks is heightened in overcrowded displacement sites. WASH promotion and communication messages to the affected people are critical to mitigate these risks.
