World Employment Programme Research (Working Paper) Technology and Employment Programme - The Capital Goods Sector in Nepal: Present Position and Prospects
PDF File Size: 726 KB | Download
This working paper is the fifth in a series of studies on the role of the capital goods industry in developing countries, within the framework of the Technology and Employment Programme.
The paper is based on the survey of capital goods users and producers in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal which were undertaken by Mr. Niitsu and Ms. Wachi of the International Christian University, Tokyo, and Mr. Hideshima of the International Development Centre of Japan, in collaboration with Professor K.K. Vaidya of Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
The authors discuss the position of traditional and modern machine and tool manufacturing in the Nepalese economy and the profile and problems of different groups of capital goods users and producers. Their analysis is intended to assess their development prospect and constraints and to identify promising areas of government action. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this study is related to the evolution of the traditional blacksmiths and carpenters into modern capital goods producers, including the socio-cultural constraints arising from the traditional social class system.
