Following the annual Earthquake Safety Day on 16 January, this issue of the newsletter focuses on hospital preparedness and Mass Casualty Management (MCM); key functions for any earthquake response. As follow-up to an EHA assessment highlighting insufficient preparedness at major hospitals in Nepal, WHO introduced triage and contigency planning workshops to enhance response capacity of regional and zonal hospitals. Simultanesouly, GTZ conducted MCM training programmes at district level and EHA contracted NRCS to strengthen first aid response capacity in remote districts. EHA expects that these initiatives will make a difference at field level in the short term. In addition to a natural disaster response preparation, the health sector needs to ensure that vulnerable people in conflict affected areas of the country have access to basic health care. EHA, through the SIDA funding, has focused on some of these areas in the eastern and western parts of the country by training first responders and providing them the necessary tools to manage a crisis. The establishment of PLA cantonment sites in the terai, throw a new dimension to the country’s health scene. At present EHA supports the government to implement a primary health care strategy in these camps and strengthen disease surveillance to avoid unwanted mortality and morbidity, a likely scenario in any camp-like setting.
