In 2015, WFP Nepal aims to provide food assistance to 488,000 people through Food Assistance for Assets (FFA), Education Support and Nutrition Support activities. FFA provides employment opportunities aimed at making communities in ten remote, food insecure districts more resilient to the effects of climatic shocks. The FFA activity in Doti district is supported by KOICA. In addition to providing mid-day meals to children in government pre-primary and primary schools, WFP also works with a local NGO to improve early grade reading through the provision of digital and as well as age appropriate learning materials and WASH activities in line with the Government’s objectives of enhancing access to quality education. WFP’s Nutrition Support programme supports the Government to improve the health and nutritional status of pregnant women and nursing mothers and children between 6 – 23 months. The Capacity Development component of WFP’s work supports drafting policy documents and strengthening the technical expertise of government counterparts in each area of our work. Food assistance to refugees from Bhutan, ongoing since 1992, reaches 23,500 people. The ongoing emergency operation, reaches 6,000 most affected households through FFA activities. The Country Programme is complemented by the Vulnerability Assessment and Mapping (VAM), Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) and Low Birth Weight Study programmes, funded by trust funds. The WFP VAM team supports the Government to institutionalise the Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (known as NeKSAP) nationwide, a food security monitoring system that includes the integrated food security phase classification and crop and market monitoring. The EPR project develops and augments government and stakeholder capacity in the areas of Logistics and ETC for responding to a major earthquake in the Kathmandu Valley.A Low Birth Weight Study, aimed at identifying the effectiveness of cash or food in addressing malnutrition, is ongoing in two districts in the south. A proposal developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, submitted to the Climate Change Adaptation Fund Board, was approved. The programme is expected to start in June 2015 and aims to address Climate Change and Resilience issues.
