This revised WASH Cluster Contingency Plan for earthquake scenario has been developed based upon the earthquake scenario prepared by HC/RC office. The rationalization for the plan is to ensure that the WASH cluster is able to respond with maximum efficacy to water, sanitation and hygiene needs following a major earthquake in the Kathmandu Valley of magnitude 8.0 or greater. In order to revise this plan, a separate WASH cluster meeting was held on 10th June 2011. The workshop was attended by a range of WASH stakeholders including government, national and international NGOs, Red Cross, and UN agencies. At the workshop it was agreed among participants that the contingency planning process should be continuous process and there will be room for improvement to make it live document. A task force was formed during the cluster meeting to closely review the draft plan and to finalise it. The task force meeting reviewed the revised plan on 14th July 2011 and finally approved this version of the plan. In addition, a number of lessons learned have been incorporated into this new version of contingency plan, as the WASH cluster approach was implemented for the response during the severe flooding that occurred in August 2008 in Sunsari and Saptari districts and diarrhoea response in July- Sept 2009 in the Mid- Far Western Regions. This 3rd version of the “WASH Cluster Earthquake Contingency Plan” represents a live document and will be the basis for planning future preparedness intervention for the WASH cluster. All cluster members consider this paper as guiding document and have committed to plan preparedness interventions in the spirit of the document.
