Two large national conferences were held by women’s networks in December, bringing together women activists from the districts to strategise on how to make the peace process work better for women. The lack of progress in implementing commitments to women’s representation and participation in the peace process was identified as major obstacle which must be overcome.
“Women’s participation in the peace process has been lacking, in all sectors of society: state, non-governmental, civil society and others. We believe that without women’s participation it will not be possible to transform the current peace process into sustainable peace with social justice and human rights at the centre” said Dr Renu Rajbhandari, the head of the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre, one of the organisers of national consultation of women’s human rights defenders.
