The people of Nepal marked the opening of the long-awaited Constituent Assembly on 28 May
with celebrations in towns and villages across the country. There were street processions, music, dancing and speeches from citizens eager for the change to be brought about by their newly elected representatives.
“I am very excited, just like the rest of the people,” Ajanta Poudel, a student in Pokhara told UNMIN Patra. “This change is the demand of our times.”
Naushad Siddiqui, a teacher in Nepalgunj, told of the long wait for the CA, and the high expectations of the people. “The CA should have been formed many years ago...but better late than never,” he said. “There will be a liberal political system where everyone has access to politics and everyone will have a livelihood.”
