There are few occasions more fitting than UN Day to reflect on Nepal’s peace process. On this day, the UN family and its friends reaffirm our organisation’s global mission to promote international peace and security, human rights and development. We recognize the gains that have been achieved. And we mark the anniversary of the UN Charter by resolving to do more.
UN Day also coincides with Nepal’s festive season, which is itself a time of reflection, as well as a time of ritual, blessing and celebration. Nearly four years since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the achievements of Nepal’s peace process should be celebrated, even as the focus must now be on the work ahead.
One significant accomplishment this year was the discharge of disqualified Maoist army
personnel, notably those who were under age 18 at the time of the ceasefire. I am proud of the United Nations' support to that exercise, not least the strong interagency cooperation that we demonstrated.
