Two months after the earthquakes, vulnerable farmers in the worst-affected districts of Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Sindhupalchowk still need urgent humanitarian assistance. They also face major new threats, with thousands of landslides already recorded in these districts after the earthquakes. FAO has already provided rice seeds, vegetable seeds for nutrition, animal mineral supplements and grain storage bags to 90 000 vulnerable farming households. In the coming months, FAO will reach even more vulnerable farmers, providing wheat seeds for winter and corrugated iron to build shelter for livestock; and additional vegetable seeds, grain storage bags and animal mineral supplements. FAO is also planning longer-term emergency work to rebuild resilient farm livelihoods. One priority is to reduce the threat of landslides to farmers, their land, animals and irrigation systems, through landslide prevention and stabilization work. A second priority is to support repairs to small-scale irrigation systems damaged in the earthquakes or landslides, to help ensure a good winter crop. More international support is urgently needed to meet humanitarian needs in the worst-affected districts and rebuild resilient agricultural livelihoods.
