In May, the Nepal Food Security Cluster carried out a detailed assessment of the impact of the earthquakes on food production and agricultural livelihoods. The Agricultural Livelihoods Impact Appraisal – led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) – looks at the six most-affected districts of Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Sindhupalchowk. An estimated 200 000 households in these districts need help to restore their agricultural livelihoods. The report confirms many farmers in these areas suffered heavy losses of crops, seeds, animals, fertilizers, tools and irrigation channels. Four out of five of these families rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, so these losses have caused an immediate rise in food insecurity. It contributed to the Nepal Government’s Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), which isexpected to be released shortly.
