The study is a joint effort by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Men Engage Alliance in Nepal. It seeks to provide a broader evidence base from which actors can design well informed multi-sectoral GBV programming, including preventative strategies for engaging men and boys in addressing gender based violence. It draws on previous studies on Nepali masculines, strategically selecting key gaps relevant for peace building, and violence prevention work. The study seeks to understand the linkages between gender identities and the use/tolerance of GBV and explores the underlying reasons for men’s engagement in violence. It also looks at a sample of ex-combatants in order to better understand the conflict dimensions in Nepal and specific programming implications for such groups. The study’s main goal is to support those working on GBV in Nepal to do so from a well informed place which includes a better understanding of masculinity, men's perspectives of violence, resilience and relevant implications for policy and programming on the engagement of men and boys as agents of change. This study was carried out from September – December 2013 and adopted a series of qualitative, quantitative methodologies, including quantitative questionnaires, life history interviews and consultations-selected conducted with 100 individuals, 70 in Kathmandu Valley and 30 in the Terai. The Terai was as a secondary focus given the conflict dimension, the need to identify potential differences in masculines, which may have been affected by the armed conflict and the crime and violence context.
