The Government of Nepal estimates approximately 70,000 people were affected by flooding in the Saptari and Sunsari Districts. According to the preliminary results of the inter-agency Koshi River Flood Impact assessment, a total of 66,500 individuals were displaced by the flood of which 42% were Indian nationals. Many of these Indians have crossed back to India in recent weeks. The Return and Rehabilitation Unit (RRU) was endorsed by the Government and will provide recommendations to the local Government on short, medium and long term activities for the flood affected communities, rehabilitation of the flood affected areas and on the implementation of the return strategy for the flood-affected
displaced population. The RRU will hold its inaugural meeting on Monday 19 January and has a mandate of two months.
