The Government of Nepal estimates approximately 70,000 people are affected by flooding in the area. According to the preliminary results of the inter-agency Koshi River Flood Impact assessment, a total of 66,500 individuals have been displaced by the flood of which 42% are Indian nationals. Many of these Indians have crossed back to India in recent weeks. The Government’s Detailed Damage Assessment/verification process is ongoing. The LDO has advised that the process is expected to be completed by the end of next week. There are approximately 9 Wards still to be verified in Shripur, Paschim Kusaha and Haripur. The Government of Nepal compensation package for the flood-affected households is expected to be released soon. The compensation package includes NPR 50,000/HH for Nepali flood-affected families and NPR 4,500/HH for Indian nationals for transportation costs home. The Poverty Alleviation Fund will be used to support
compensation for the flood-affected in 9 VDCs. Agencies operating in Saptari requested support from the Saptari CDO to provide increased security during distributions, particularly in Camps C and D. People holding ‘fake’ cards have turned up for distribution of food and relief materials and have threatened staff when their cards have been rejected. Numbers of beneficiaries for food relief have steadily increased in Saptari due to the fake card issue. The CDO has advised that distribution should only be provided if beneficiaries can produce other identification documents, corroborating the identity on the ration/distribution cards and has assured agencies operating in the area of increased security.
