As the Secretary-General said in his recent report to the Security Council, Nepal’s peace process is at a crossroads. Your conference takes place at a time of very important political discussion and negotiation, which must find a way out of the current impasse, develop a new political consensus and set a new road-map for the peace process. This will include a new timeframe for the Constituent Assembly election, an essential step in the democratic transition underway in Nepal. The media, journalists, and women journalists in particular, have a key role to play in consolidating the democratic transition in Nepal. The FNJ made a great contribution to the historic transition in Nepal, during the difficult conflict years and both before and during the Jana Andolan, and your organisation continues to play an important role today. I applaud the Women’s Committee of the FNJ for convening this Second National Conference.
