Nepal has made remarkable progress in relation to mine action in the past twelve months, though we continue to see need for greater mine awareness in the community to prevent further loss of life and injury due to the remnants of war.
UNMIN is committed to assist both the Maoist army and the Nepal Army in the safe storage and destruction of mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Since the registration of combatants and weapons began in January this year, the Maoist army has safely stored thousands of kilograms of explosives and a further thousands of IEDs in sites a safe distance outside its seven main cantonment sites. In recent weeks mine action experts working with UNMIN have begun the safe destruction of these IEDs and explosives, in cooperation with Maoist army commanders. UNMIN is also assisting the Nepal Army to meet its commitment to clear all landmines and other sites sown with explosives.
