PDF File Size: 2.12 MB | Download
Bajhang covers a 3,422 km area of the Seti zone in the Far-Western Region of Nepal. The district borders Bajura and Humla on the east, Baitadi and Darchula on the west, Humla and Tibet (China) on the north and Doti and Achham on the south. Bajhang district comprises 47 Village Development Committees (VDCs), 11 Ilakas and two electoral constituencies, with its District Headquarters (DHQ) in the small town of Chainpur in the VDC of the same name. Lack of physical infrastructure presents a major challenge to accessibility and service delivery in Bajhang. The only option to get to the district is the Khodpe-Bajhang road, also known as Jaya Prithivi Bahadur Singh Road, which runs the 109km from Khodpe of Baitadi and connects to the Bajhang DHQ. There is also an airport located close to the DHQ; however, flights have not operated regularly for two years. In 2011, Bajhang’s population numbered 195,159 people, 52% of whom female. Bajhang is one of the districts of Nepal significantly affected by the armed conflict. A Local Peace Committee (LPC) was established in Bajhang in 2009, comprising 20 members: 10 representing political parties, six women, three Dalits, three conflict victims, and one each from Nepal Red Cross Society and Federation of Nepali Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Bajhang has two electoral constituencies and 11 political parties, which actively participated in district governance via the All Party Mechanism. In mid-May 2013, the total nuber of people registered to vote in Bajhang reached 80,685. Bajhang has a District Court, a District Attorney Office and a District Police Office with extended field presence through 11 Police Posts staffed by 148 personnel. In Bajhang, women suffer from gender-based violence and domestic violence, gender-based discrimination in education, in household chores and in nutrition, as well as differential social and cultural norms. In 96% of all households, women own neither the house nor any land in Bajhang, although a quarter of all households are headed by women in the district. Caste-based discrimination is also still common in most communities in Bajhang. The situation in District Headquarters is improving, however Dalits still do not freely share space with the people of other castes and sometimes are not allowed to use common wells, taps or other water resources. Although it is not very effective, there is a Dalit Upliftment District Coordination Committee intended to support inclusive programming in particular in the District Development Plan. There are also more than a dozen NGOs, led by both Dalits and non-Dalits, working for the socioeconomic and political empowerment of Dalit communities. While over half of men were literate in Bajhang in 2001, only 16% of women could read and write. A decade later, 73% of men are literate, compared to only two in five women (40%). There are 439 basic education schools in Bajhang, and 32 higher secondary. The average per capita income in Bajhang is NRs 4,930.56 The main occupation for the majority of people (around 80%) in Bajhang is agriculture, which is also the main source of household income in the district. In 2001, 49% of the population (81,456 people in total) was economically active, 93% of whom in agriculture, 5% in trade, 1.3% in technical occupations, and 0.5% in administration. Bajhang district has one hospital and extensive coverage by subsidiary health care facilities. The most common health problems dealt with in the district are headache and fever, urinary tract infections, acute respiratory infections, acute pulmonary disease, abdominal pain, intestinal worms, diarrheal diseases (especially during monsoon season), typhoid, viral fever and injuries due to falling. Bajhang is among the districts where the majority of children under five are affected by stunting and anaemia; over a fifth of women of reproductive age are also underweight, and a third of them anaemic.
