WFP urgently requires funds in order to maintain the current relief response, and is appealing to donors for funding, especially as all three operations are only seven percent funded as of 8 May. It is vital that the response from the international community matches the immense needs of the people of Nepal. Two weeks into the earthquake relief operation, food is an increasingly urgent need complicated by the logistical challenges of reaching those affected in some of the most remote areas of Nepal. Helicopter airlifts combined with fleets of specialised vehicles are racing against time to deliver shelter and food before the monsoon rains start in late June. WFP is also looking to engage mountain trekkers to clear trails and local porters and pack animals to help deliver food high up in the mountains. As of 8 May, with support from the local government and partners, WFP has positioned enough food for 857,000 people, distributed food for 389,000 beneficiaries living in six of the most heavily affected districts: Gorkha, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchowk, and Kabhre. In parallel with the life-saving food distributions, WFP is putting in place a complementary nutrition intervention that will be integrated into the operations in eight districts. Furthermore, in Makawanpur district where the market is functioning, WFP will soon transition to a cash-based transfer. In its third and final release of the initial emergency needs assessment, NeKSAP— the Nepal Food Security Monitoring System (supported by WFP and funded by the European Union)—reports that the majority of markets are functioning, however, in the most mountainous areas, where markets were already limited, they remain disrupted. Additional assessments are now underway with the results to provide a more precise picture of household needs in the most affected districts.
