Akanshya Shah (Republica): You know that after the breakdown in political consensus, it seems that the international community including the UN, the trust they earlier had on the Maoists has drastically gone down. What is your thought?
RSG: I can only speak for UNMIN. We have continued to maintain good relations with all the parties, including the Maoists. We are in constant dialogue with them. And, yesterday and today, I have met the leaders of all the major parties and appealed to them privately, as I am appealing publicly, for them to adhere to their peace process commitment and try to avert a breakdown in the peace process in the next few days.
RSG: I can't speculate on the future of UNMIN if things worsen, on the future of the peace process. The risks at this moment are truly serious. Everyone I speak to wants to see the peace process continue. So much has been invested in this process by Nepalese leaders, by the Nepalese people that it would be a shame and a disaster to let this fall by the wayside. It is within reach of the parties to come to an agreement today, the parties themselves recognize the elements that would be part of an agreement and they have all said so. What is needed now is to put it together and come back to a level of trust and confidence where the peace process can move forward.
