On completion of the scheduled implementation of the first phase of Micro Enterprise Development Programme, a pioneer programme in Nepal, which has taken a comprehensive and integrated approach to micro enterprise development for poverty alleviation, we would like to thank express our gratitude to all those associated with the programme since its very conceptual stage to the final phases of its implementation between June 1998 to December 2003. It is a matter of pride and satisfaction that the Micro Enterprise Development Programme has been able to produce results according to the objectives and goals it had set in 1998 to deliver a range of services necessary for micro entrepreneurs to be promoted amongst the poor. The programme was successfully not only in exceeding the set target of establishing six thousands micro entrepreneurs from impoverished rural poor families, but it was also able to demonstrate and prove that its integrated approach to micro enterprise development can work in Nepal and produce results to support the governments poverty alleviation efforts. Implementing the programme over the period of five years was definitely not easy considering that there already were various isolated programmes being implemented which was similar to that the Micro Enterprise Development Programme had set out to deliver. The only difference was that the programme took an integrated approach through a partnership between the various existing service delivery organizations. In addition, working conditions were not at its best for programme staff due to security reasons as a result of the insurgency. However, the commitment and dedication of those working at the grassroot level, in particular, the Enterprise Development Facilitators (EDF) and Enterprise Development Officers (EDO) whose role in the programme implementation is praiseworthy and commendable. However, the role of the Professionals at UNDP, Programme Officers, bureaucrats at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply and in particular professionals and support staff in the Programme was also one of the principle reasons for the successful completion of the programme.
