The main objective was to train multipurpose health workers to staff rural health assistants had been trained and 96 had taken up duty in the field. In August 1966 the name of the project was changed to "Strengthening of Health Services". The aim of the project was expanded to assist the development of a phased comprehensive health service extending to the entire community through hospitals and a network of health posts. Initially it was reaching an advanced stage.
