URL-http://apps.who.int/iris/ With the establishment of Bir Hospital in Kathmandu, at the turn of the century, the seed was sown for the development of health services in Nepal. A tuberculosis sanatorium and chest clinic were later established in Kathmandu Valley. Paropkar and mission organizations began to render limited services. Even a quarter century ago, there was only a scatter of hospitals (half their bed-strength located in Kathmandu) run by a handful of medical officers, some nurses, and compounders and dressers. In the following years, hospitals and ayurvedic dispensaries were gradually established. Training of doctors was accelerated.
