Bulletin of the World Health Organization - Randomized controlled trial of anterior-chamber intraocular lenses in Nepal: long-term follow-up, WHO. URL-http://apps.who.int/iris/ Globally, cataract is the most frequent cause of blindness, affecting more than 20 million people (1). Most of these people live in rural areas of developing countries, where there are limited ophthalmologically
trained personnel or services. There are two ways to remove the cataractous lens. It can be extracted in its entirety (intracapsular cataract extraction, ICCE) or the lens contents can be removed leaving the posterior lens capsule in place (extracapsular cataract extraction, ECCE). ICCE is a quicker and simpler technique, but is associated with more complications related to disturbance of the vitreous face. It is still commonly performed in rural Africa and Asia, whereas ECCE is the preferred technique in industrialized countries. The disadvantage of ECCE is that, in a proportion of cases, the lens capsule becomes opaque, requiring further intervention in order to maintain good vision.
