In this assignment, the writer was asked to assist in the conduct of the first inter-country Seminar on Leprosy Control, and to review the leprosy control project (Nepal 0013) and assist in the formulation of a plan of action for the project. The first part of the assignment was covered by the report on the seminar. This report relates to the second part. It is estimated that the prevalence of leprosy in Nepal is of the order of at least 10 per mille of the population. This means that leprosy is a considerable public health problem, meriting the serious attention of the Government. The incidence rate of 10 per mille is the internationally accepted level for hyperendemicity. In terms of actual numbers, it means 120,000 sufferers from leprosy of whom approximately 30,000 may be regarded as significantly infective to others, and urgently requiring treatment and observation.
