The Public Health Laboratory, Kathmandu (Nepal), started functioning in the first week of May 1967. The writer was assigned to the Laboratory on a temporary basis from 5 May to 7 December in order to assist in the initial stages of its development. There was no other WHO staff member assigned to the project until Dr. B.B.G. Nehaul took up his duties as microbiologist on 2 November.WHO, under the United Nations Development Programme (Technical Assistance), is providing technical assistance as well as equipment and supplies. His Majesty's Government of Nepal is giving all other personnel and supplies, and is meeting the local expenses necessary for the project.
